When Kinsey asked me to do photograph her wedding this past summer, so many thoughts ran through my mind. Am I ready to do a wedding on my own? (At this point, I was still living in New York, interning with a photographer in the city) Do I have enough lenses? Who will I take to assist me? Should I be excited or nervous? Along with a billion other worries/concerns/emotions…
By the time the wedding day came along, most of these worries had disappeared. I felt ready, I honestly did. New York City got me ready. I rented lenses, like most professional photographers recommend doing at the beginning. I convinced my brother and roommate to come along to help out. And I was incredibly excited.
I think that’s what kept me going through the day – how excited I was. Excited to be doing something I truly love. Excited for this awesome new opportunity I’m living out. And especially, as cheesy as it is, excited to be sharing in the most important day of these two people’s lives (all wedding photographers say it…but until you get to do it weekend after weekend you can’t understand how cool this job is).
It all came naturally to me that day, so my internships must have prepared me. It honestly felt like I was just interning again, except this time I was in charge. It helped that I had the pleasure of working with an easygoing bride and groom and family (family can make all the difference). I really could not have asked for a better “first” wedding experience.
Thank you, Kinsey and Muzzy, for giving me the chance to take part in your big day. And thanks, of course, for providing me with a reminder of why I love doing what I do.
